Composer Study - Florence Price

Florence Price

“I am poor at pushing publicity when it comes to myself.”

Florence Price (1887 – 1953) was an American composer, pianist, and teacher of the Modern time period. Price began playing and composing at a young age. She began to teach piano lessons to support her family after her divorce. Price was the first black female composer to have a piece performed by a major orchestra in the United States (Symphony No. 1). She wrote the “Fantasie negre No. 1 in E minor” in 1929 based on the spiritual “Sinner, Please don’t Let this Harvest Pass”.
