Composer Study - Gustav Holst

Gustav Holst

"The enormity of the universe revealed by science cannot readily be grasped by the human brain, but the music of The Planets enables the mind to acquire some comprehension of the vastness of space where rational understanding fails."

Gustav Holst (1874 – 1934) was an English composer of the Modern time period. Holst played piano, violin, and trombone and was a trombonist in the Carl Rosa Opera Company. He taught at the James Allen’s Girls’ School to support his composing. His most famous work The Planets (1914 – 1917) is a “series of mood pictures” for the astrological stories of seven planets.
