Composer Study - Heitor Villa Lobos

Heitor Villa Lobos

“Artists live with God – but give their little finger to Satan. I sleep with the angels and dream of the devil.”

Heitor Villa Lobos (1887 – 1959) was a Brazilian composer from the Modern time period. Villa Lobos made money as a child playing piano for local movie theaters. He composed symphonic poems that utilized native Brazilian legends and patriotic songs and that promoted Brazilian nationhood. Due to travel restrictions from the Brazilian revolution in 1930, Villa Lobos would arrange local concerts to premier the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Brazilian composers.
