Edward Grieg (1843 – 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist of the Romantic period. He survived two life threatening diseases (pleurisy and TB) in his teen years. He gave his first concert at age 18. Grieg became friends with poets, doctors and even Franz Liszt. His music helped shape Norwegian identity, especially with his most famous work, the Peer Gynt suite. The Peer Gynt suite (including In the Hall of the Mountain King) for the play, Peer Gynt by Norwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsen.
