Composer Study - Tomas Luis deVictoria

Tomas Luis deVictoria

"Music is not man’s invention, but his heritage from the blessed spirits."

Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548 - 1611) was a Spanish priest and composer of the Renaissance time period. Born the seventh of nine children, he became a choir boy, organist, and music student. At 17, he went to study music in Rome where he was influenced by Italian style of music. He then became a chapel master, music teacher, and priest back in Spain, even writing Requiem Mass for Spanish empress Maria. His song, O Magnum Mysterium, uses sacred text and polyphonic music lines.
