Composer Study - Dmitri Shostakovich

Dmitri Shostakovich

"Real music is always revolutionary, for it cements the ranks of the people, it arouses them and leads them onward"

Dmitri Shostakovah (1906 - 1975) was a Russian composer and pianist. Though famous in his own lifetime, he had a complex relationship with the Soviet government. Shostakovich wrote the first three movements of the Seventh Symphony in Leningrad while it was under siege by the Germans in World War 2. The first time he played it for friends, he was interrupted by German bombs. The first full performance was played by a half-starved orchestra, the drummer thought to be dead but found alive in a morgue by the conductor.
